Your 2026 Humanitarian of the Year!

María Aguilar is a community leader, cultural advocate, and passionate champion for equitable access to education and opportunities for all families.
For more than 15 years, María has dedicated both her professional and personal life to breaking barriers for underserved communities throughout Arkansas. Through every role she has held, she has become a trusted bridge between institutions and diverse communities, with a special focus on Spanish-speaking families across the state.
Today, in her leadership role with the Central Arkansas Library System, María continues to redefine what community engagement looks like. She has developed and led innovative bilingual literacy programs, financial empowerment workshops, cultural festivals, educational initiatives, and cross-sector partnerships that have connected thousands of families to critical resources, educational opportunities, and spaces of belonging. Under her leadership, public libraries have become more than places for books; they have become centers of trust, cultural celebration, empowerment, and inclusion for communities who previously may not have seen themselves reflected in public institutions.
One of Maria’s greatest strengths is her ability to connect institutions with the populations they serve. In 2015, she worked tirelessly to build relationships between educational institutions and the Mexican consulate in Little Rock, helping secure scholarship opportunities for students who otherwise had no pathway to college. In 2021, María facilitated a partnership between The Dream.US and Arkansas Tech University, resulting in life-changing scholarship opportunities for students and creating long-term benefits for their families.
María’s impact has been widely recognized. In 2025, she received the Cultural Contribution Award from the Downtown Little Rock Partnership, and in 2024, she was nominated for the ALBA Awards for her role in community empowerment. Additionally, she provides strategic vision as a Contributing Editor for Arkansas Total Magazine.
Yet María’s greatest achievement cannot be measured by awards or titles. They are reflected in the students who became graduates, the women who discovered their leadership, the children who saw their culture celebrated, and the families who found hope because someone believed they belonged.
María firmly believes that when a community has access to knowledge, culture, and opportunity, it does not just change one life; it transforms the future of generations to come.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, María combines a strong academic foundation with deep compassion and a joyful approach to life. She earned her bachelor’s degree in international business from Universidad de Guanajuato. She finds balance and inspiration through her love for yoga, cycling, and exploring the world through travel. Above all, her greatest pride and motivation is her family, as a mother of two and a grandmother of two.
